avoid chemicals during pregnancy

How can someone avoid chemicals during pregnancy when chemicals are everywhere? Unless you live in th
e middle of a forest, far from any of our modern ways of living, you are exposed to toxic chemicals on a daily basis. Though, most people do not recognize that their homes are indeed filled with chemicals. Our aim with this article is to raise awareness of hazards so that people can begin to make informed decisions and improve their situations.

Pregnancy is a sensitive time in which a new life is absorbing everything that the mother is being exposed to, and what was once considered to be the truth about the placenta is no longer the truth: It was once thought that the mother’s placenta was capable of filtering toxins that enter the mother’s system before the toxins reached the unborn baby. The truth of the situation, which has been revealed by the studies conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), is that an average of 287 industrial chemicals course through the veins of newborn babies- chemicals that have not been filtered by the mother’s placenta.

This is not written in order to frighten people. This is simply to bring light to the truth- we cannot continue to live the way that we do (as a whole of society), and expect to have better health results than what we are experiencing. Chemicals change things, but people don’t always understand that the chemicals that they are ingesting and breathing are affecting their bodies, and their newborn babies, in unknown and potentially dangerous ways. There are a number of ways that pregnant women can avoid chemicals, even if these steps are only going to reduce, and not completely eliminate, toxin exposure. Here are some ways to avoid chemicals during pregnancy:

Eat Organic and Unprocessed Foods:

Eating organic can often be more expensive than eating non-organic, but if all it takes is a little bit of budgeting, then eating organic is a natural first step to avoiding chemicals. The saying “you are what you eat” applies to chemicals in food as well as the type of food we are choosing to eat. Furthermore, there is more energy in unprocessed food, so the mother and the baby will both benefit from eating unprocessed and organic food, whenever possible.

Drink Filtered Water:

filtered water at home

Just because tap water is legal, it doesn’t mean that tap water is a safe long-term choice. Tap water contains an abundance of chlorine, a chemical that is known to kill good intestinal flora, be detrimental to the immune system, and has been linked to cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects.

“People think they can chlorinate their way to safe water, and they can’t do it.” – Bill Walker, Representative of the Environmental Working Group.

We don’t think that the side effects of hydration should be exposure to toxins. We talk about the water filter system that we use here: Nikken PiMag Waterfall. We like it because it removes more than just the chlorine, and it adds minerals, and ionizes it so that the body recognizes the water and more easily absorbs it for better hydration.

Watch For Chemicals in Household Products:

A container of skin cream or laundry detergent may use the words “natural” and “organic”, although often it is difficult to determine whether those statements are completely accurate. Oftentimes companies use the word “natural” as a sales gimmick, yet when you read the ingredients list, you can see that the product is not natural at all. The advocacy group Healthy Child Healthy World spends a ridiculous amount of time investigating high quality and safe products, and then they make recommendations to people that are confused about what to buy. Here is a link to some of the things they have found to be safe: Shop Healthy. This is the skin care we use and recommend to others: True Elements

There are so many Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ways to stay safe in the home. Take the time to learn a new all-natural and safe dish soap recipe or eco-friendly baby wipe, and your body and your children will be better off because of it. Chemicals are sprayed all over mattresses as well. Flame retardants have been proven to be fairly unnecessary, although it’s understandable why someone would want a fire-resistant mattress. Be sure to choose an organic mattress for yourself and for your new baby. The one we recommend has naturally fire-retardant properties. We would be happy to share information with you when the times comes. For now, please feel free to read our article on Chemical Mattresses.

Clean Your Indoor Air:

“Pollution levels indoors, where Americans spend 90 percent of their time, are much higher than outdoors.”- Environmental Working Group What can you do? Let fresh air come inside, to begin with. Although, what people most often don’t understand is that their indoor air is polluted with chemicals, dust, dander, mites, and so on. Where are all of the chemicals coming from? Did the people who built your house use non-toxic paint on the walls? Probably not. Everything, from glues to drywall, in our homes is manufactured using chemicals.

Imagine this: You know the skull & crossbones pictured on most cleaning products and paints? That stuff is smeared all over our walls, flooring, furniture, etc. Something happened, at some point, and all common sense was lost. Most of us just accepted the fact that our homes would be painted with chemicals, forgetting that we would then be breathing those chemicals for the rest of our time in the home (which is approximately 90% of each day).

If you are going to go the extra step (which we recommend you do), and purchase a high quality air purifier, it’s really important to be sure that the filter you are buying does not emit harmful ozone, which can do far more damage than good. We recommend this air purifier as we have seen the results in our own homes and we have seen it improve the lives of people worldwide.

Very informative post. Buy using Healthy Organic Food products during pregnancy you can avoid adverse effect of chemicals. One more easy way to get comfortable pregnancy is to have only natural foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish etc in your regular diet.
