Goal Setting: 7 Steps That Actually Work

goal settingThere are countless goal setting systems out there, and if you read all of them you will be confused because they all vary and some offer some pretty bogus information. The 7 steps to goal setting below were formulated based on tried and true principals, and if followed with intention, belief, and a positive attitude, they are sure to help you on your path to a greater life.

Goal Setting Step 1: Be Specific

Specificity is crucial to goal setting. Often times, goals are not accomplished because the person setting the goal didn’t put enough thought in designing what the outcome would look like when the goal would be accomplished. Is the goal to have more money, or is the goal to earn $12,000 every month in 2013? It’s worth spending time getting really specific. Only then will measuring the goal against the result be something that makes sense.

Goal Setting Step 2: Write It Down

Studies show that even though most people believe in goals, the majority of people don’t set goals. In addition, of the people who set goals, most of those people don’t bother to write them down. Writing them down is important for a number of reasons, including the fact that when a goal is written, it is remembered. Get specific with the goal and write it down somewhere it will be seen every single day.

Goal Setting Step 3: Set a Time Frame

Be really specific with the time set for a goal. Is your goal to eat healthier, or is your goal to make healthy choices every day and lose 10 pounds by the end of May, 2013? Having a time frame for the goal will make the goal more “real” and attainable. Note: if the end-date comes along, and the goal is only halfway complete, then adjust the date and keep working to achieve the goal. Don’t give up just because the date didn’t work out as planned!

Goal Setting Step 4: Read It Aloud

There is power in the voice, and it may sound silly, but the more the goal is repeated out loud, the more the brain will believe it and the more easily the goal will be accomplished. Stick the goal somewhere noticeable, and repeat the goal out loud, even if you feel funny doing it. The funnier you feel, the better it is, actually. You can do it!

Goal Setting Step 5: Take Action Now

Getting into the habit of “doing it tomorrow,” rather than doing it right now, is a surefire path to not accomplishing the goal. You may not be able to accomplish the whole goal in one fail swoop, but there is surely one thing you can do right now that you don’t have to wait for tomorrow to do. Correct? What is one thing you can do now so that you feel closer to your goal?

Goal Setting Step 6: Reward Yourself

Reward yourself along the way, and once the goal is achieved. You are a goal-achiever and goal setting is becoming easier and easier for you. As you make progress toward your goal, give yourself a reward. This is not to say that you should buy yourself an ice cream cone every time you eat a salad, though. Rewards are different for every person and every situation. Make the reward something that you will feel good about afterward.

Goal Setting Step 7: Set More Goals

Once a goal is accomplished, it shouldn’t be the end of all goal setting rituals. Begin again, and this time raise the bar higher than before. You know you can accomplish your goals, so get creative and excited to start the process again. Some people have lots of goals going all the time, in relation to all areas of their lives. Keep up the great work!
